Peugeot's RCZ Wins Top Gear Award

Top Gear magazine today announced that the Peugeot RCZ is its 'Coupé of the Year' 2010.

The UK's best selling automotive magazine took its assessment of the RCZ to the extreme by road testing it in Northern China in the proximity of the Great Wall; the first time the Peugeot RCZ has been in the world's largest car market.

In appreciating the many virtues of the Peugeot RCZ, the magazine reports; "The Peugeot RCZ is a beautifully balanced car, easy to drive quickly. The rapidly expanding Barcelona-based brand will further boost its profile in the capital when retail partner AutoPlanet opens its new outlet at its multi-franchise site on the Lea Valley Road.

SEAT Fine-tunes Its Engine Offerings

Small capacity 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit added to Ibiza range
Economy improved by up to 25 per cent versus previous 1.6
Refined new 2.0-litre common-rail turbodiesel in Leon, Altea and Altea XL

SEAT is continuing its extensive programme of product renewal and improvement with the launch of a pair of impressive new engines in its best-selling models.

The Ibiza, in all three bodystyles – SC, 5dr and ST – is now available with an exciting new 105 PS 1.2 TSI unit, mated either to a five-speed manual gearbox or state-of-the-art seven-speed DSG with double clutch. The turbocharged petrol engine replaces SEAT's 1.6-litre 105 PS.

Meanwhile the Leon and Altea families now feature a 140 PS 2.0 TDI with common rail fuelling in place of the previous unit's pump injector system. This, too, is offered with a manual gearbox or DSG.

The new Ibiza 1.2 TSI combines trademark SEAT sporting intent with outstanding efficiency. Despite being considerably smaller in terms of cubic capacity than the 1.6 it replaces, this new TSI generates an identical 105 PS.

Performance and acceleration figures both improve versus the 1.6; in the case of 0-62 mph acceleration, the time drops by more than half a second to 9.8 seconds while the top speed is marginally better, too.

And proving that you can have your cake and eat it, the new turbocharged 1.2 also makes the Ibiza both more economical and more environmentally responsible. Compared to the 1.6, combined economy is improved by a massive 25 per cent from 44.8 mpg to 55.4 mpg (SC and 5dr), while CO2 emissions are slashed by 20 per cent from 149 g/km to just 119 g/km.

The engine is available to SE and Sport buyers across all three bodystyles, and all versions are fully compliant with the latest EUV emission control legislation. Manual versions are also badged ‘Ecomotive’ because they feature SEAT's new stop/start and brake energy recovery technologies. Prices start at £12,780 RRP for the Ibiza SC 1.2 TSI SE.

The other important engine introduction - which sees SEAT's family-sized Leon, Altea and Altea XL gain the option of a new 140 PS 2.0 TDI CR unit - also brings lower fuel consumption and emissions, along with significantly improved refinement.

Like the TSI, the 2.0 TDI CR is offered with a manual or DSG 'box but, regardless of transmission, offers nimble acceleration and a smooth, efficient drive. In the Leon, the new common rail turbodiesel sees CO2 drop from 147 g/km to just 125 g/km, while combined economy climbs from 50.4 mpg to 58.9 mpg, a welcome 15 per cent improvement.

Similarly impressive improvements result from the new common-rail engine's introduction in the Altea and Altea XL, too. CO2 in both bodystyles drops to just 129 g/km, while combined fuel economy climbs to 57.6 mpg.

However, the economy improvements do not come at the expense of driving enjoyment or pure performance.

The Altea 2.0 TDI CR, for instance, races from rest to 62 mph in a spirited 9.7 seconds meaning that the new version is, in fact, quicker off the mark than the previous pump injector version.

Prices for the Leon 2.0 TDI CR in SE spec start at £18,570 RRP, while a similarly engined Altea SE is available from £18,770 RRP.

SEAT UK's Ibiza, Leon and Altea Product Manager, Andy McGregor, said: “Our continuing programme to update and enhance our suite of engines now sees the arrival of these two great units.

“The extra refinement, economy and performance from the common rail turbodiesel are clearly impressive, while the arrival of the excellent new 1.2 TSI in the Ibiza shows that, when it comes to today's engines, smaller really can be better!”

Kia's Sportage & Venga Awarded Top Euro NCAP Honours

At Waters AutoPlanet we're pleased to announce that two of Kia's newest vehicles, Sportage and Venga, have both been awarded the top 5-star safety rating by leading independent European safety organisation, Euro NCAP, making them two of the safest cars on the market this winter.

The Kia Sportage crossover and Venga B-segment MPV were both given the maximum 5-star rating, placing them at the top of their respective classes and in the distinguished company of other Kia models such as the Soul, cee'd and Sorento.

Are You Geared Up For Winter?

To make sure you stay safe on the roads during the inclement weather, follow our helpful motoring tips...

Winter motoring requires special care and a little preparation if you’re to avoid a breakdown or accident. We’ve put together a list of easy to follow advice for combating Wintery conditions. Just remember, use common sense, don’t risk your life or the lives of others.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze costs only a few pounds, but a cracked engine block will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

A 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in the cooling system is needed in winter. This gives maximum protection down to -34° centigrade, and without it, severe engine damage costing hundreds of pounds can occur.

Vision

Through the winter months dazzle from the low sun can be a particular problem. Improve vision significantly by making sure that the windscreen is clean – inside and out. Scratches, abrasion and chips on the outside can also worsen the dazzling effect of the sun.

Use air conditioning for faster demisting and to reduce condensation on cold windows. Keep the windscreen and other windows clear – if your vision is obscured through dirt or snow you could face a hefty fine. Check windscreen wipers and replace if necessary.

Windscreen washer fluid should be topped up and treated with a proprietary additive to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Don’t use ordinary engine antifreeze as it will damage paintwork. Clear snow from the roof as well as from windows. Snow piled up on the roof can fall onto the windscreen obscuring your view and can also be a hazard to other road users.

Visibility

Check that all bulbs are working and that headlights are clean and aimed correctly. You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced. You may also use front or rear fog lights but these must be switched off when visibility improves as they can dazzle other road users and obscure your brake lights.

Keep the number plates clean too, as you can be fined if they are dirty and illegible.

Tyres

Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. At least 3mm of tread is recommended for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm.

Don’t reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn’t work, and reduces stability. Check you have a working jack and wheel brace, and that you know how to change a wheel if necessary.

Consider changing to winter or all season tyres – these have a higher silicone content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures, and therefore gives better grip in cold wet conditions.

Preparing To Travel

Get up at least 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare the car. Don’t drive off with a tiny hole cleared in your windscreen. Clear all windows of snow and ice using a scraper and de-icer.

Besides an ice scraper and de-icer, it’s worth carrying a mobile phone with fully charged battery, torch, first-aid kit, tow rope, blankets, warm coat and boots, jump leads, snow shovel, warning triangle, an old sack or rug (to put under the wheels if you do get stuck) and water repellent spray.

Put safety first when the bad weather closes in, it's always a good idea to allow extra time in winter for your journey.

Driving In Snow And Ice

Stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow.

Gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving. Select second gear when pulling away, easing your foot off the clutch gently to avoid wheel-spin.

When climbing a hill it’s important to avoid having to stop on the hill by waiting until it is clear of other cars or by leaving plenty of room between you and the car in front. Try to maintain a constant speed, choosing the most suitable gear well in advance to avoid having to change down on the hill.

When driving downhill, reduce your speed before the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes. Leave as much room as possible between you and the car in front.

Always apply brakes gently. release them and de-clutch if the car skids. If you do get stuck, straighten the steering and clear the snow from the wheels. Put a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels to give the tyres some grip. Once on the move again, try not to stop until you reach firmer ground.

The Sun Road Tests The Upgraded Mazda2

In The Sun’s ‘motors’ section, Ken Gibson road tests the upgraded Mazda2, and writes: “On the road the 2 has always been a good drive – agile as a small car should be and they have modified the suspension to make the handling slightly sharper.” He also refers to its looks, remarking that the Mazda2 is “one of the sexiest small cars on the road – and sex sells.”

He also praises the interior, saying that Mazda has “upgraded all the trim with more durable plastics in the most touched areas, plus new instrument panel and dials.” He adds: “They’ve also restyled the seat fabrics and added more patterns to make them easy on the eye and comfortable.”

Gibson concludes his review positively, writing: “The price is good value. From £9,995 to £14,455, you get a great looking small car that fits the bill.”

Seven Heaven: SEAT Alhambra Glides Into AutoPlanet SEAT

The new SEAT Alhambra is making an elegant entrance into our showroom at AutoPlanet SEAT Tunbridge Wells as the Spanish brand’s highly-anticipated successor to its original seven-seat MPV makes its public debut here.

Fresh from the wheels up, and proving beyond doubt that practical full-size MPVs do not have to be lacklustre to look at, the new Alhambra once again places SEAT at the head of the people carrier class.

The largest car SEAT has yet made at more than 4.8 metres stem to stern, the Alhambra also becomes the Spaniards’ most luxurious and technologically advanced offering with a raft of clever and important new features that showcase the firm’s formidable technical expertise.

Styled by SEAT design boss Luc Donckerwolke and his team in Martorell, today’s Alhambra shows how sporty, dynamic and engaging it’s possible to make a modern seven-seater with, in particular, SEAT's trademark ‘Arrow Design’ nose adding a sense of purposeful style to proceedings.

That svelte shape also contributes in no small part to the SEAT's exceptional Cd figure of just 0.299, making it one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in its class.

Further back, the car’s capacious new shell sports arguably the most obvious distinction between this and previous vehicle to wear the ‘Alhambra’ badge – two sliding rear doors which significantly improve practicality.

Inside, seven individual seats can accommodate seven adults in genuine comfort with even third row occupants benefiting from generous knee and headroom. Today’s Alhambra does away with the old-style individually removable seating concept in favour of a clever new fold-flat system that sees all five second- and third-row seats pivot into the car’s floor at the simple tug of a lever.

Access to those third row seats, in particular, is now a cinch thanks to the debut of the easy entry slide and tilt second row seats.

You want space? Alhambra's got space. Up to a massive 2,297 litres of it, to be precise. While even in five-seat form (with just the third row folded) there’s as much as 1,167 litres of load bay on offer. Needless to say, storage around the cabin is typically generous, too, as a profusion of cupholders, tray tables, cubbies and pockets easily swallows the detritus that goes along with family outings.

Beneath the graceful bonnet of the front-wheel drive Alhambra lie a variety of modern engine and transmission options. The counterpoint to one of two top notch EU V-compliant 2.0-litre common rail turbodiesels, of 140 PS or 170 PS denomination, is an especially capable 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged direct injection 150 PS petrol powerplant.

Depending on trim level, all three are offered with either a precise six-speed manual or sporty yet flexible six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox). The result is a seven-seater capable of covering the 0-62 mph sprint in just 9.5 seconds (2.0 TDI CR 170 PS manual) and topping out at 130 mph (2.0 TDI CR 170 PS manual).

At launch, all Alhambras boast some of SEAT's most important eco-minded Ecomotive technologies including Stop/Start and Brake Energy Recovery. Thus, all Alhambras are badged Ecomotive while the 2.0 TDI CR 140 PS manual grabs the honour of being badged E Ecomotive thanks to its range-best CO₂ emissions of just 146 g/km.

Economy, as you might expect of such a slippery and carefully engineered vehicle, is laudable, too, with as much as 50.4 mpg available on the combined cycle (2.0 TDI CR 140 PS manual).

Bristling with equipment, the new MPV is offered in SEAT's simple trim designations: S, SE and SE Lux. But even the entry-level S versions are hardly what you’d call humbly specified. Standard across all Alhambras are such goodies as 3-zone climate control, parking sensors front and rear, sliding rear doors, electronic handbrake, Bluetooth hands-free phone connection, 16” alloys, Stop/Start and Brake Energy Recovery.

Equipment gets even more lavish as you ascend the range, with SE Lux versions boasting a dazzling array of standard-fit kit. Brief highlights include power-operated sliding rear doors and tailgate, panoramic glass sunroof with opening front pane and electrically operated sun blind, black leather upholstery, 12-way electrically adjustable font seats, SEAT Media System including satnav with dynamic route guidance and rear view camera.

The innovative trio, Eco cee’d, Eco Venga and Sportage (Mild Hybrid), have significantly reduced CO2 emissions – down to just 94, 114 and 117 g/km respectively.

The Eco cee’d five-door hatchback is a concept car powered by a modified version of Kia’s ‘U2’ family 1.4-litre diesel engine. Cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient, this engine generates 90 ps at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 240 Nm is available from just 1,900 rpm, for excellent driveability.

The car also features Kia’s fuel-stretching ISG Start/Stop system – which automatically switches off and then restarts the engine in congested city driving – optimised gear ratios and a large underbody panel beneath the 4.26-metre long car’s to smooth its aerodynamics. Its CO2 rating is 94 g/km.

Intended for production later this year, the new Eco Venga is also equipped with Kia’s 1.4-litre, 75 ps diesel engine, plus many of the technologies from the Eco cee’d concept. In addition, low-friction engine oil, special low-torque taper roller bearings in the transmission and low-rolling resistance, high pressure tyres help to reduce CO2 emissions to 114 g/km.

Kia’s second eco concept car for Paris is the Sportage Mild Hybrid. Based on the all-new Sportage compact SUV now on sale across Europe, this model is powered by the new, larger 1.7-litre version of the U2 diesel. Small changes cut aerodynamic drag, brake drag and tyre resistance so the SUV’s CO2 rating is a modest 117 g/km.

The Peugeot RCZ is continuing its barnstorming year with two more awards, this time at the Auto Express New Car Awards where it scooped the Best Coupé Award and the Auto Express Design Award, which is decided by an online readers' vote.

The response to the online Design Award vote was emphatic; from a judges' selection of 40 vehicles, the Peugeot RCZ ran away with 11 per cent of the readers' votes registered at autoexpress.co.uk

Harding also warns of the scheduled rise in VAT next year and expects this will result in local businesses bringing forward car buying decisions to beat the tax increase.

The main tax measures announced by the new Chancellor were:

· Value Added Tax – up to 20% from January 4, 2011.

· National Insurance - employee and employer National Insurance (NI) rates will increase by 1% from April 6.

· Corporation Tax - a reduction in the main rate of corporation tax from 28% to 24% starting on April 1, 2011 and small profits rate cut from 21% to 20%.

· Capital allowances - a reduction in the main rate of capital allowances from 20% to18%, and the special rate from 10% to 8%.

· Fuel duty - a 1p a litre rise in duty on October 1 and a further 0.76p a litre rise on January 1, 2011.

· Company car tax - rates to rise as scheduled in April next year with the starting rate of 15% applying to cars emitting between 121 and 129 g/km.

Harding concluded, “We’re going to see local businesses continuing to adopt ‘greener’ fleet policies with more and more vehicles falling into lower CO₂ categories because that is a sure-fire way to cut costs. Mazda’s range of low emission models is continuing to expand and we expect to win more fleet business as a result in 2010.”

Peugeot celebrates its 200th anniversary with the launch of a range of special edition 308 models called Millesim 200. There will be four models available powered by Peugeot's highly efficient VTi petrol and HDi diesel engines. All models are based on the five-door S hatchback version but with extra standard specification of: fully body coloured exterior, 16" alloy wheels, Sports front grille, Sports rear bumper, Peugeot Connect USB & Bluetooth and unique Millesim 200 badging.

Not only can Peugeot customers drive to any place via the most optimal route, safe and on time in their Peugeot, but as pedestrians they can navigate freely on foot too, using the 'Walk' feature with built-in voice guidance. They can even record that guidance in their own (or loved ones) voices using the free 'Own Voice' app from Nokia's Ovi Store. Peugeot Celebrates 200 Years Of Manufacturing Prowess

Peugeot's 200th anniversary sees the culmination of two centuries marked by revolution, evolution and innovation.

200 years ago, two Peugeot brothers, Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric, established the Peugeot company with the creation of 'la société Peugeot-Frères et Jacques Maillard-Salins'. The company was set up after the brothers had converted their father's corn mill into a steel mill to make the most of the industrial revolution which was gathering pace.

Since then, Peugeot has been associated with saws, tools, steel crinoline stays, salt and pepper mills, coffee grinders, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, cars and vans. Each of these diverse products is founded on those early origins in steel while bearing Peugeot's hallmark of modernity and innovation.

The Lion

As early as 1858, Peugeot adopted the lion as the universal emblem of its saws and ancillary tools. The choice of the lion was made to illustrate the strength of the teeth, the suppleness of the blade and the rapidity of cut. Since then the Marque's emblem has been represented in a variety of ways, right up to the brand new 2010 two-tone version featured for the first time on the RCZ Sports Coupé.

A rapidly evolving brand

Throughout its 200 years, Peugeot has developed a unique long-term vision, enabling it to anticipate underlying trends, keep abreast of the times to adapt and accept new challenges. This vision led Peugeot to successfully produce bicycles and motorcycles from 1886, and then in 1891 the motor car.

From the first petrol-powered four-wheeler codenamed the Type 2, to its more recent products, Peugeot draws its strength from its industrial roots in the east of France allied to a pioneering spirit. That spirit led Peugeot to create the 403, the first mass-produced diesel powered saloon; to launch the 205, a true icon thanks to its many versions and sporting victories; to introduce the particulate filter as a world first on the 607; to drive an HDi FAP engine to victory at Le Mans and to create the BB1, the urban crossover between the car and the scooter.

By continually nurturing its engineering, human and industrial development, Peugeot has grown from an annual production rate numbered in dozens to a present day average daily production of several thousand units across 18 families of cars and light commercial vehicles.

Peugeot's genetic marker; the numbering system

Expansion started after the First World War, as demand for more and more varied cars grew and in 1929 Peugeot instigated the numeric identification system that is still in use today. The 201, named purely because it was the engineering department's 201st project, was the first car to carry a number and this evolved to become the three-digit naming system. The first digit indicates which family the vehicle belongs to and the third number indicates the model's generation. The second number, the 0, is the link between them.

Since then, the 2-series and 4-series are the only ranges that have continued this system without interruption. More than 26 million of these cars have been sold, representing nearly half of the Marque's total sales.

In 2000, letters were added to the three numbers to designate specific body shapes; CC for Coupé Cabriolet, SW for the family/leisure body shape. In 2004, 75 years after the 201, Peugeot added a four-digit moniker to depict models that were not part of the original range, starting with the 1007.

Uniquely 'Peugeot’ innovations

Independent suspension

Comfort on the road is a regularly acknowledged quality of Peugeot vehicles and, perhaps due to the hilly countryside around its Franche Comté home, Peugeot has frequently led the way with innovations in suspension systems. The 201 was the first car to be equipped with independent front wheels, guaranteeing comfort for its occupants and Peugeot is still the only manufacturer to produce its own shock absorbers to fit on its models. Today, Peugeot is still committed to excellent road manners as illustrated by the 3008 which, despite its tall architecture, is impressing drivers with its driveability. The Peugeot 3008 Crossover also features grip-control, allowing the deployment of intelligent drive options in five different modes.

The Coupé Cabriolet

Among these innovations, the Coupé Cabriolet deserves special mention, with an ingenious system that allows the rigid roof to retract into the boot. This made its first appearance as early as the 1930s on the 401 Eclipse but it was the 206 CC that brought this body shape to a wider public at the turn of the 21st Century and, with 700,000 units sold, it has made Peugeot the world leader in CCs.

Diesel engines

Peugeot is also synonymous with the development of the diesel engine, which it made available for the first time on a production model, the 403, in 1959. This saloon was also the first car to feature an automatic cooling fan controlled by engine temperature. The popularity of diesel was instant, with the 403 being the first Peugeot model to pass the one million sales mark.

More diesel innovations were to follow: in 1975, the 604 became the first car in Europe to be equipped with a turbo diesel engine and, in 1999, the 607 was the world's first car to be equipped with a particle emissions filter, a technology that has helped cement Peugeot's position as a world leader in emissions reductions. More than 2.3 million Peugeots are equipped with the particle emissions filter.

The environment drives further innovation

It was as early as 1941 that Peugeot first pioneered electric power with the VLV, a light urban vehicle with an electric motor, several hundred of which found their way onto the streets of Paris. However, concern over man's effect on the climate from the late 20th Century has driven an explosion in low carbon technologies. Naturally, Peugeot has been at the heart of this push with the ION concept car in the 1990s, and later the electric 106, which is still the top-selling zero emissions car.

Of course, the greatest effort has been on making continuous improvements to the efficiency of naturally aspirated engines and Peugeot is at the forefront of the industry, with half of its cars sold in Europe emitting less than 130g of CO2/km.

In the autumn of 2010, Peugeot will return to the electric car market with the iOn and next year, Peugeot will marry internal combustion with electric power in the 3008 HYbrid4, a diesel-electric hybrid producing 35% less CO2 than a diesel engine. This set-up also offers great driving flexibility with optional four wheel drive.

In 2012, another major step will be taken with the rechargeable plug-in 3008 HYbrid that will produce just 50g CO2/km.

Environmental performance driven by competitive performance

As long as there have been motor races, there have been Peugeots to take part in them, starting with the first ever race in 1895, the Paris - Bordeaux - Paris, which was won by a Peugeot.

Success in those early pioneering events drove Peugeot to start developing cars for motor sport, with equal success, starting with the L76 at Brooklands in 1913. The L76 was powered by the first engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. It was the precursor to the victorious "Grand Prix" campaigns which saw Peugeot take the chequered flag at the Indianapolis 500 in 1913, 1916 and 1919.

The 1920s saw successes at the Targa Coppa Florio and Spa 24 Hours before one of the Marque's dealers, Darl'mat, inspired the creation of a competition variant of the 302, the 302 Special Sport. This gained distinction in the 24 Hours, with three cars crossing the finishing line at the 1937 event, before making its mark the following year in the 2 litre category.

More recently, the successful African campaigns of the 404 and 504 forged a reputation for reliability among the Marque's models, establishing a direct link between production cars and their motor sport derivatives. Of all Peugeots however, it is the 205 that symbolises most strongly the Marque's competitive spirit, evident not only commercially but also on motor racing circuits the world over. This appetite for competition led Peugeot to organize a Competition Department, producing racing models that would win in a variety of demanding competitive events ranging from standard and long-distance rallies to Formula 1 and Endurance.

Today, endurance and fuel-economy are watch-words for Peugeot alongside performance and so Le Mans has become a natural focus, with the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP taking the double in 2009. Peugeot is looking to the future by keeping close watch on a hybrid endurance prototype, the 908 HY.

Style: a key factor of Peugeot's identity

Peugeot has reaffirmed its ambition to be a reference in terms of style with its latest concept, the SR1, an elegant roadster with ideal proportions. Whilst adopting the most modern styling ideas, SR1 carries the same Peugeot genes shared by stand-out models from the past, such as the 402, the 404, the 504, the 205, the 406 Coupé and not forgetting the brand new RCZ, which is sure to become a classic in its own right.

These genes were first set down in the 1930s with Peugeot's first styling department, headed up by Henri Thomas. After the classic good looks of the 201, the new Director of Style gave the 2 series an aerodynamic style, whilst the 402, presented at the 1935 Paris Motor Show, appealed with its inclined front grille depicting a coat of arms and its streamlined wings.

Perhaps the most instant characteristic of all modern Peugeot cars is the slanted, feline headlamps, an initiative first put into production on the 504 under Stylistic Director, Paul Bouvot. This visual signature is an essential feature of the Peugeot style, as is the dynamism that Gérard Welter gave to each of the models designed while he was in charge, including the 205, marketed with the slogan; "a manufacturer draws its claws".

Peugeot has also held a number of styling collaborations, starting in the 1930s with the superb 302 roadsters and coupés and later, Peugeot drew inspiration from the Turin based coachbuilder Pininfarina for the 403 in 1955. This collaboration proved particularly prolific and gave rise to several of the Marque's finest designs: the 504 Coupé, 306 Cabriolet and 406 Coupé.

Looking forward, the BB1 and SR1, initiatives of Jean-Pierre Ploué and Gilles Vidal, convey strong messages for the future. The BB1 4-seater zero emissions micro-car concept opens up new avenues in urban mobility whilst the SR1 for its part lifts the veil on large Peugeots of tomorrow.

Well before the start of the motor car story, the bicycle's history began in 1886 in spectacular fashion with the Peugeot Grand Bi with its 1.35 metre diameter wheel. This exotic invention quickly made way for bicycles with wheels of equal diameter and in 1890, Peugeot presented the hugely popular Lion which was characterised by its lightness (22 kg) compared to other cycles of the time.

First entered in the 1905 Tour de France, Peugeot Cycles have numerous victories to their name and have become renowned for quality gear changes and transmissions, as well as a comprehensive range that places the firm at the forefront of bicycle manufacturers. The bicycle boom quickly became established and sales of Peugeot cycles rose to 50,000 units in the 1950s, culminating at more than 400,000 in the 1970s.

Today, Peugeot is investing again in the bicycle with a range that provides an original and practical response to the challenge of mobility. With the introduction of an electrically powered bicycle this year, Peugeot is the only manufacturer to propose an integral electric mobility solution, with the iOn electric city car and the e-Vivacity electric motor scooter.

Peugeot petrol power on two-wheels

Peugeot first added petrol power to its bicycles in 1898 at the Beaulieu plant, the Marque's historic birthplace for bicycles, cars and motorcycles. As early as 1904 Peugeot motorcycles grabbed the headlines by setting the world speed record, followed by a string of victories, including the 1924 Nations Grand Prix, the 9 world records of the 515 in 1934, and success at the 1952 Bol d'Or.

In the 60s, the trend moved from motorcycles to mopeds with breathtaking success. In 1973 alone Peugeot broke the records by selling over 550,000 of its famous "100" family. The 1980s saw the advent of the scooter and Peugeot was the first to launch the new-generation scooter with a plastic body in 1982 and this soon became the preferred mode of urban transport. During the 1990s, Peugeot enjoyed further success, in particular with the SV, and became the first manufacturer to sell the electric scooter with the Scoot'Elec in 1996.

The 21st century saw further Peugeot innovation as it introduced the first ABS braking system as standard on a 125cc scooter. In 2004, the Ludix 50 modular scooter broke the all-important £999 price tag and immediately became a best seller in Europe in its category. One year later, Peugeot was the first manufacturer to develop a 125cc engine turbocharged by a volumetric compressor, brought to market on the Satelis range which took Peugeot into the top-of-the-range GT scooter market.

This year, more than 110 years after the appearance of the first Peugeot motorcycle, the Marque is still present making it the oldest manufacturer of motorised two-wheel vehicles in the world.

In 2010, Peugeot evolves again

At the beginning of 2010 Peugeot reinvented itself, presenting a new Marque plan and making clear its ambitions for 2015: to climb three places in the world ranking of car manufacturers; to make Peugeot the benchmark in terms of style and to become the leader in mobility services.

To reach these objectives, Peugeot can rely on an ambitious product strategy with no fewer than 14 new models scheduled to appear between 2010 and 2012, new style lines illustrated to perfection by the SR1 concept car, new mobility offers and also a new visual identity with a more modern, two-tone Lion and a new international signature: Peugeot, MOTION & EMOTION.

A global manufacturer with 55 million vehicles to its name, unique in its ability to propose an offer of global mobility, Peugeot has the strengths to face the future with confidence and rise to the challenge of creating ever greater harmony between the motor car and its environment.

See 200 years of history come alive at the Peugeot Museum

The Museum of l'Aventure Peugeot in Sochaux opened its doors in 1988 and shows public collections of small metalwork objects, two-wheelers and cars. The collection includes 450 cars, 350 motorcycles and bicycles, more than 3,000 assorted objects, as well as a documentary and iconographic treasure trove containing more than two million items. The Museum presents each vehicle in context with its period, providing an accurate record of Peugeot's development over time.

In 2010, the Museum opened up two new spaces, increasing the exhibition floor space to 6,000 m2. These new areas showcase new collections, including the 5 series, light commercial vehicles and a special focus on Peugeot's achievements in motor sport.

Wendy Heinson has been appointed as the new General Manager at well known Southampton car supermarket and new Renault dealership AutoPlanet.

Wendy, age 50 from Bournemouth, brings with her more than 10 years’ experience to the new dealership on Second Avenue in Millbrook which recently underwent a major refurbishment as well as creating 20 new jobs in the local area.

An award-winning combination of driver appeal, lifestyle, versatility and workhorse practicality has enabled the Mazda6 2.2 litre diesel Estate to be named ‘Best Estate Car’ in the 2010 Fleet World Honours. The awards were announced in the usual tradition, at the Royal Automobile Club, London this week (Tuesday, 18 May).

The award completes a stunning quartet of titles for the Mazda6 Estate, which earlier this year won ‘Best Estate Car’ awards from both Fleet News and What Car? magazines and was named ‘Towcar of the Year 2010’ by The Caravan Club.

The Fleet World Honours are presented annually to those motor manufacturers, service companies and individuals who have, in the opinion of the judges, achieved the highest possible level of excellence in their sector.

Chairman of Judges, Steve Moody said: “Mazda continues to build on its solid reputation in the fleet market as a manufacturer of stylish and attractive cars. But it also features all the clever touches we have come to expect from Mazda, converting from a five-seater into a load-lugger in a matter of seconds.”

The exact specification for the model that received this honours award was the Mazda6 2.2-litre Diesel Estate TS² 163ps manual and is priced at £20,559 on-the-road. Its strong residual values, keen pricing and competitive CO₂ emissions saw the Mazda6 Estate beat off stiff competition including the Skoda Superb Estate, Toyota Avensis Estate and Honda Accord Estate to be named ‘Best Estate Car’ at the 2010 Fleet World Honours Car Awards.

The estate diesel model emissions reduced to below 150g/km to help offset April 2010 5g/km increases in company car tax thresholds and rises in VED rates on cars with emissions of 151g/km and above.

Kick off World Cup Fever with Waters Kia
